Project 1-22

Carbon Farming

Three generations of the Carmody family have served as stewards of this beef cattle breeding and fattening property for the last 140 years. The longevity of their tenure means they have seen and endured numerous weather events and are able to attest to the impact of climate change on these lands in a way others cannot. Hotter, dryer summers which bring an increased likelihood of bushfires, is just one of the climate related challenges the family are currently grappling with and motivators for engaging with regenerative carbon farming methodologies.

Climate Action Initiatives

Initiatives being explored by the Carmody family include reducing stock levels in order to make paddocks available for crop rotation of pulses and legumes; this practice has been proven to create numerous environmentally positive outcomes including increasing organic soil carbon, reducing reliance on fertilisers, reducing use of fossil fuels, and fewer greenhouse emissions. Additionally, the family are researching and trialing diversifying the pasture species on their lands as a method to mitigate and address soil erosion. By reinvesting CADR revenue generated by running a CarbonPump project on their land the Carmody family are striving to preserve and improve their farmland for future generations.
